Since Jeremy Corbyn put his name forward as a potential leader, hundreds of thousands of people have joined the Labour Party. Jeremy's honest, straight-talking politics has captured the public's imagination. He has, however, faced daily attacks from some of the media and his political opponents. And he has responded with courage and dignity.

To show support for Jeremy's campaign to transform the way politics is conducted, a stellar line up of comedians, singers and poets will be performing a special show compered by superstar housewife Barbara Nice.

The full line-up for the night includes

Compere: Barbara Nice, actress ('Phoenix Nights', 'Coronation Street', 'Max and Paddy's Road to Nowhere'), radio sitcom star ('Comedy Showcase')

Jeremy Hardy, comedian (former 'Perrier Award' winner), actor ('Blackadder Goes Forth'), TV panellist ('QI', 'Mock the Week'), radio panelist ('The News Quiz', 'I'm sorry I Haven't a Clue', 'Jeremy Hardy Speaks to the Nation')

Charlotte Church, singer (Classical Brit award winner and Brit Award winner with several top ten hits), TV ('The Charlotte Church Show', 'Have I Got News for You', 'Paul O'Grady Show', 'Question Time')

Janey Godley, actress ('River City'), author ('Handstands in the Dark'), radio panelist ('Loose Ends', 'Woman's Hour', 'Just a Minute'), writer of award-winning radio documentary 'Stuck in the Middle', playwright ('The Point of Yes').

Lobby of Scottish Government

  • Scottish Parliament

Thursday 10 December, 12.30pm,
Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh

In the last five years £250M in cuts have been made by Glasgow City Council with a loss of 4,000 jobs and many crucial services. The council has stated it intends to make further cuts of up to £120M in 2016 and 2017 and has raised the possibility of another 3,000 job cuts, this is over 10% of the remaining workforce. This will be a disaster for vital services in the city and hit future employment opportunities for our young people.

Oppose Scottish Government cuts to local councils

The Glasgow trade unions are aware of previous statements by the Glasgow City Council Leadership that the city is treated unfairly under the current national local government funding arrangements. Based on previous figures, this could be as much as £30m over the next two years.

The trade unions call on the Scottish Government to change its policy on restricting funding for local government services.

Alternative NO CUTS Budgets and campaign to win more money

The city’s trade unions, along with various community organisations and anti-cuts groups, have been campaigning against these cuts from the start. Glasgow and Scotland’s politicians have a choice – make the Tory cuts or do not. The trade unions will support any elected politician who adopts this strategy of “No More Cuts” whilst leading a fight to win more money for public services.

A message to John Swinney and the Glasgow MSPs

We are very disappointed that John Swinney, Finance Secretary, has refused to meet the Glasgow Trade Unions to discuss our campaign for an “Alternative No Cuts Budget”.

We hope that the 16 Glasgow MSPs will support our campaign.

Transport to the Lobby

If you agree with the Glasgow Trade Unions campaign then why not come to the lobby. Call 552 – 7069 to book a seat on our bus.

Young Socialists Launch

Young Socialists Launch

  • John Smith House

Come to the launch of Scottish Labour Young Socialists: a new organisation that seeks to bring together members, trade unionists, and activists who believe the Labour party should be a democratic and socialist force for change.

Inspired by the movement that elected Jeremy Corbyn and brought thousands of young people into the Labour Party, Scottish Labour Young Socialists represent youth attracted by the prospect of a Labour Party led by the grassroots - members, trade unionists and social movements, as opposed to a party micromanaged by a clique of professionalised politicians with the links and privileges of the rich and powerful.

Scottish Labour Young Socialists hope to build on this momentum and establish a force on the Scottish Labour left that will campaign for more democratic party structures, socialist ideas, and get involved in campaigns fighting austerity and injustice.

Membership is open to anyone under the age of 30.

Our launch event will be split into three sessions:
Labour Past: How we got here?
Labour Present: What is the situation now?
Labour Future: What is to be done?

Speakers TBC.

Drinks and probably dancing will follow! Details of the pub location will be posted soon.

Book Launch: What Would Keir Hardie Say?

  • Waterstones

Luath Press invites you to the launch of What Would Keir Hardie Sayedited by Campaign for Socialism member Pauline Bryan.

To celebrate Keir Hardie and his legacy, Pauline Bryan has gathered the thoughts of authors, MPs and political commentators. Split into three sections, ‘Guiding Principles’, ‘Campaigns and Causes’ and ‘Making his Mark’, this book poses important questions:

What would it mean for the Labour Party to look to Hardie’s socialist ideals and vision of equality?

What would Hardie make of today’s political landscape – the economy, welfare, trade union rights, immigration and privatisation?

What is next for the Labour Party as its members try to understand the lessons of its election defeat?

Light refreshments will be served.

Entry is free but tickets must be reserved in advance.

HOPE not hate International Brigades Commemoration

HOPE not hate International Brigades Commemoration

  • La Pasionaria Statue

From the Greater Glasgow HOPE not hate website:

Greater Glasgow HOPE not hate in association with the International Brigade Memorial Trust are holding a Commemoration to the 65 Glasgow International Brigadier’s who lost their lives fighting the fascist Franco regime in Spain from 1936-1939. The Spanish Civil War is viewed as a pre-cursor to World War Two, acting as a testing ground by Franco’s allies Mussolini and Hitler. The International Brigades were made up entirely of volunteers most of whom were working class. The UK Government had adopted a non-intervention policy on the issue of Spain but the 40,000 volunteers; 2,100 from Scotland and 550 from Glasgow did not. They took up the fight against fascism when others wouldn’t. The sacrifices that the volunteers and their families made should not be forgotten and new generations of Glaswegian’s should be aware of this piece of working class, local and international history.

For more information on the International Brigades click here...

The Glasgow Commemoration will take place on Saturday 19th September 2015 from 11.30-12.30pm at the La Pasionaria statue, Custom House Quay on Clyde Street. People attending should assemble from 11.15am. Speakers include Mike Arnott; IBMT Trustee Scotland, Tommy Campbell; UNITE the Union, Kath Campbell; Granddaughter of Glasgow International Brigader and Ryan Boyle; UNISON Young Member Committee. There will also be a minutes applause as a mark of respect for the volunteers and the laying of wreaths.

After the commemoration, a social event will be held at UNISON Glasgow City Branch, 84 Bell Street, Glasgow, G1 1LQ from 1.00pm to 4.00pm where we will have live music, speakers and poets who include legendary working class folk singer Arthur Johnstone with backing guitarist Stephen Wright. Calum Baird, fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival will be playing us a selection of traditional folk/protest songs plus a taster from his new album; No Right Turn. Paul Sheridan lead singer of folk rock Glasgow group; The Wakes will also be playing range of protest and The Wakes numbers. Speakers will be from the Peoples Assembly Scotland and International Brigades Memorial Trust. Many stalls with merchandise and information will also be in attendance.
